Learn More About Facial Fillers Like JUVÉDERM®

The visible signs of facial aging occur over time as a result of sun exposure, heredity, and lifestyle. One of the earliest signs of aging is a loss of facial fullness and volume, as well as the development of wrinkles. Softening of these facial lines and the restoration of volume and fullness in the face often can be achieved non-surgically with injectable dermal fillers at New Jersey’s Glicksman Plastic Surgery.

JUVÉDERM® Plus XC

What is JUVÉDERM®?

Soft tissue fillers need to be safe, hypoallergenic, and long lasting. The first dermal fillers were produced in the 1980s, and they were primarily collagen-based gels. These early dermal fillers required a skin test to make sure patients were not allergic, and usually lasted only two to three months. Over the years, the hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers gradually replaced these collagen-based soft tissue fillers. JUVÉDERM® is a hyaluronic acid-based filler produced from bacteria in a fermentation process. With the addition of the Ultra gel to the line in 2006, these dermal fillers became the most popular HA fillers in the United States market.

Who is a Candidate for JUVÉDERM®?

JUVÉDERM® gel is used to help correct facial volume loss, especially areas of deep folds and wrinkles. It is particularly useful around the mouth and the lower face, and it is a powerful tool in the fight to reverse the signs of aging. Small amounts of JUVÉDERM® can be used in conjunction with BOTOX® to treat other areas of the face. Dr. Glicksman personally evaluates and injects every one of her patients. Photos are taken before injections to assess exactly where a patient might benefit from dermal fillers.

Areas of natural asymmetry are noted, and patients participate in the decision as to where and when they will receive product. Dr. Glicksman only uses the highest quality dermal fillers in her patients. This is the top of the JUVÉDERM® XC filler line. When placed into the tissues, it can produce very soft and natural results that last up to one year.

Getting Prepared for Your Dermal Fillers Treatment

Most patients tolerate the discomfort of the injection without any difficulty. Some patients prefer to be prescribed a topical anesthetic to provide more comfort during the procedure. Patients need to inform Dr. Glicksman if they are currently taking any prescription blood thinners, Aspirin, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. These blood thinners may increase the risk of bruising and swelling after the procedure and need to be discontinued about a week before injection. Patients can expect occasional bruising after dermal fillers injections but can immediately resume their normal activities.

Liquid Rhinoplasty

Although considered an off-label use of Juvederm®, Dr. Glicksman has been performing “liquid rhinoplasty” for patients who are unhappy with the shape and contour of their nose. Small defects and minor corrections after trauma can be temporarily corrected using small amounts of dermal filler. The procedure takes just minutes but may produce dramatic results.

VOLUMA® XC

VOLUMA® XC is another hyaluronic acid-based injectable in the JUVÉDERM® dermal fillers line, designed to treat volume loss primarily in the mid-face or cheekbone area. VOLUMA® XC can provide volume and lift to the cheek area, correcting the flattening of this area due to aging.

Who is a Good Candidate for VOLUMA® XC?

Dr. Glicksman uses VOLUMA® XC to add volume to the cheekbone area for a variety of reasons. For younger patients who may desire a bit of contour enhancement, dermal fillers can be safely added to obtain fullness and lift for their cheekbones. After weight loss, while many patients are happy with their new body contour, they feel that the volume loss in their face makes them look older. VOLUMA® XC helps replace this lost volume, restoring a more youthful cheek area. For some older patients, Dr. Glicksman also may suggest VOLUMA® in combination with other dermal fillers for patients who wish to lift and restore volume to their face and jawline without surgery.

How Long Does VOLUMA® XC Last?

VOLUMA® lasts up to two years, and the majority of Dr. Glicksman’s patients who are treated with VOLUMA® usually require less product at their second treatment.

VOLBELLA® XC

VOLBELLA® XC is the newest hyaluronic facial filler approved by the FDA, specifically designed to treat the fine lines around the lips. Since it is the thinnest and finest of the JUVÉDERM® XC dermal fillers, Dr. Glicksman suggests this filler for her patients who desire a softer, less dramatic look. Dr. Glicksman is one of a handful of physicians in the United States who began using this new dermal filler in 2016.
