Dr. Glicksman was one of the first plastic surgeons in the United States to offer her breast implant patients routine implant follow-up with High Resolution Ultrasound (HRUS). In 2019 the FDA released updated guidance on breast implant surveillance. Women with breast implants should begin screening their implants at year 5 and every two-three years after with either MRI or ultrasound. Dr. Glicksman strongly recommends that her patients obtain their recommended breast imaging after the age of 40 with mammography and ultrasound as indicated. Breast implant surveillance is an implant screening tool and not a substitute for breast imaging. To follow the implants, Dr. Glicksman offers all of her patients routine in-office implant screening after 5 years and then every two years after, until the implants are either replaced or removed.

There are very few breast implant surveillance centers in the United States and Europe. Dr. Glicksman established the Ultra-Care Implant Surveillance Center™ in order to provide her own patients, as well as patients who underwent implant surgery elsewhere, accurate follow-up as their implants age. Silicone breast implants must be monitored to assure they are intact and to help make safe medical decisions about when to replace or remove breast implants. Breast implant surveillance with HRUS has been shown to be up to 97% accurate in sensitivity and specificity to detect an implant rupture1. Other local breast implant complications such as a hematoma (bleeding) caused by surgery or trauma, and a seroma, the collection of fluid around and implant, can be readily detected with HRUS. As compared to breast MRI, ultrasound is less expensive, there is no radiation exposure, no claustrophobic concerns, no restrictions for pacemakers, clips, or metal ports, and has high speed and efficiency.
