Male Breast Reduction Provides a More Masculine Chest

Gynecomastia is a condition in which there is abnormal male breast development, often corrected by gynecomastia surgery in New Jersey. In younger males, the condition may first appear in adolescence and may lead to significant issues with a teenager’s self-esteem.

Boys with gynecomastia may have difficulties with peer ridicule and bullying, and they are often reluctant to discuss their problem with their parents. Signs of low self-confidence include avoidance of activities such as swimming, going to the beach or gym, or finding excuses not to remove their shirt in social settings. Adolescent gynecomastia may continue into young adulthood, or may develop later as a result of heredity, hormonal changes, or as a drug-related side effect. A medical work-up may be recommended in some cases to rule out an underlying medical condition before gynecomastia surgery is chosen as a solution.

The Treatment of Gynecomastia: Surgery and More

An excess of glandular tissue, an excess of fatty tissue, or a combination of both gland and fat can be the cause of gynecomastia. The treatment of gynecomastia has evolved over the last 30 years, becoming a safer procedure with a quicker recovery.

For male breast reduction patients who have a small amount of firm fibro-glandular tissue just beneath the nipple-areola area, the simplest procedure may be the direct excision of the excess tissue through a very small but well-hidden incision within the areola.

For male breast reduction patients with a combination of fibro-glandular tissue and fat, liposuction may also be performed as part of gynecomastia surgery to remove any excess fatty tissue on the chest. This helps to flatten and produce a more masculine appearance to the entire chest area.

Finally, for older male breast reduction patients who may have stubborn fat remaining on their chest despite weight loss and exercise, newer non-surgical techniques such as CoolSculpting® may be used. CoolSculpting® has been shown to safely reduce small amounts of subcutaneous fat from the chest without the need for surgery or anesthesia.

Gynecomastia Surgery Patient Evaluation and Planning

Patients considering a procedure to help correct gynecomastia will be evaluated by the doctor to determine which male breast reduction procedure, including gynecomastia surgery, is best. The consultation will typically include an examination of the chest, including photographs to document the problem areas. For many patients, an additional evaluation will be performed using the Canfield Vectra 3D simulator. This three-dimensional planning tool helps Dr. Glicksman and her patients identify possible existing asymmetries of the chest wall and breast area. This attention to detail further defines each patient’s potential gynecomastia surgery or non-surgical options.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery and Recovery

If gynecomastia surgery is required, the procedure typically takes about one hour, depending on the amount of tissue that needs to be removed. All surgical procedures are performed at the doctor’s fully accredited and licensed ambulatory surgical facility. Male breast reduction patients leave the center sore, but comfortable, without the need for narcotics. After the procedure, gynecomastia surgery patients are placed in a comfortable compression vest that can be well hidden under their clothing for about two weeks. Most patients return to their normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. Patients may also shower the next day. Normal cardio type exercises can usually be resumed in about two weeks after gynecomastia surgery.

CoolSculpting® for Chest Fat

For some patients, excess fat alone may be treated without the need for gynecomastia surgery. With the new CoolAdvantage hand-piece, both sides of the chest can be treated in as little as an hour. Patients will likely begin to see results as early as three weeks after their first treatment. While CoolSculpting® may not be the treatment of choice for patients with excessive firm glandular tissue, it is a nonsurgical option for patients with areas of stubborn chest fat.
