Dr. Caroline Glicksman, a board certified plastic surgeon in New Jersey and an experienced breast augmentation surgeon was asked to comment on the recent bankruptcy of the French breast implant manufacturer Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) and their worldwide recall of their silicone gel breast implants. It was recently discovered that the company had substituted an industrial grade silicone gel for the medical grade silicone gel usually used to fill their gel breast implants.
Very few American women have received these devices, as PIP never sold these particular silicone breast implants in the US. If a woman is concerned that she may have received PIP silicone gel breast implants out of the country, then she should contact her plastic surgeon and request information on the manufacturer of her silicone implant. She should then schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon with experience in breast implant revisions and breast implant complications
