Laser
Dr. Glicksman first started using lasers in cosmetic plastic surgery in 1988. At that time there were very few applications for lasers and high quality
aesthetic results were very difficult to obtain. Laser technology has come a long way in 20 years. Dr. Glicksman has always maintained a high interest in the use of lasers
and has kept up to date with this rapidly growing technology. It is extremely important to always utilize the correct laser for the proper individual application. One laser
cannot treat all problems.
Lasers can be used to successfully treat a variety of skin problems. The laser light penetrates through the skin to reach the desired target. This may be a
hair follicle or a small blood vessel. When the laser light reaches its target, it is immediately absorbed as heat. Due to the extremely short pulse that a laser is capable
of firing, the surrounding tissue is not damaged. In addition, the laser energy is delivered through a chilled handpiece, so the skin is protected and there is less discomfort
to the patient. Laser treatments are in-office procedures that are performed using a topical anesthetic to lessen any discomfort.
Pigmented related problems
- Hyperpigmentation and solar lentigos from sun damage can be safely lightened or completely removed through the use of the Q-switched
Nd:YAG .This relatively painless procedure can remove brown spots and hyperpigmentation that may have been resistant to bleaching creams or chemical peels. All pigmented lesions
will be carefully evaluated prior to any laser procedure to determine if a biopsy is necessary.
- The LightSheer Diode Laser SystemŽ is an FDA approved laser designed to permanently reduce unwanted hair. Based on its ability to be absorbed as heat by the melanin (pigment)
in and around a follicle, it can permanently destroy unwanted hair. The laser is pulsed, or turned on for only a fraction of a second, just long enough to damage the hair follicle.
The handpiece has a cooled tip, protecting the skin, while providing greater comfort during the session. Most patients require a minimum of three to four sessions to achieve their
desired results.
- Tattoo removal has come a long way since the earliest surgical and sanding type procedures of the 70's and 80's. With a growing popularity in tattoo art, there is a greater need
for a safe, effective and cosmetically superior method of removal. This is a staged procedure that gently fades the pigment while producing the least damage to the overlying skin.
Dr. Glicksman is presently using the Hoya ConBio™ laser. This type of laser is a Q-switched Nd:YAG that can safely remove dark blue, black, and red ink tattoos, as well as most shades
of green and light blue. It is one of the most advanced aesthetic medical lasers, emitting multiple wavelengths to provide for a full spectrum of tattoo removal.
- Lasers, such as the Lyra® can also be used to treat vascular lesions, including small hemangiomas, facial telangectasias and unsightly leg veins, based on laser light energy
being absorbed as heat by another pigment found within the blood vessels. The Laserscope Lyra® can produce a very long wavelength and long pulses, combined with high energies.
This design produces a beam that can safely and effectively treat all skin types, including very dark and tanned patients. This laser also is equipped with an integrated chilled handpiece
that protects the skin and provides increased comfort.
Skin Resurfacing
The UltraPulse® CO2 Fractional Laser is the latest advancement in treating wrinkled, aged, sun damaged or scarred skin. The Active FX skin resurfacing laser offers
patients an office based procedure with minimal downtime. Unlike the pigmented lasers, the wavelength of light emitted by a CO2 laser is absorbed by the water in the skin. The "Ultrapulses"
of the laser vaporize the top layers of the skin, removing brown spots, areas of hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and acne scars. This new technology differs from the older CO2 type resurfacing
lasers as small bridges of normal tissue are left untouched to aid in regeneration. The process is clinically proven to stimulate collagen contraction and remodeling, which improves not
only the appearance of the skin, but the texture and elasticity over time.
Active FX CO2 Fractional Resurfacing can:
- reduce discolorations and brown spots secondary to sun damage and hormones
- improve fine lines and skin texture
- produce an improvement in collagen contraction and skin elasticity over 6 months post-procedure leading to long-term remodeling
- produce an improvement in acne, chicken pox or post-traumatic scars
- be repeated at 6 months if desired
- be performed as an office-based procedure with only topical anesthetic. Rapid return to normal activities with minimal downtime, usually less than five days.
