Excess skin and fat in the upper and lower eyelids add considerable years to a person’s appearance. Serums and creams may improve the appearance of dark circles and puffiness, but they cannot remove excess skin, or fat from around the eye. A blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is one of the first surgical procedures that I may recommend to my patients who desire facial rejuvenation. It is one of the few procedures that when done well, lasts for many, many years. I also recommend eyelid surgery to patients who can no longer get the lift they want from Botox alone. Many Botox users find that they become limited in how they can adequately treat their aging forehead until they address the excess skin around their upper and lower eyelids.
This surgical procedure is most often performed under sedation or general anesthesia at my fully accredited Surgery Center. Incisions in the upper eyelid are placed well hidden within the upper lid crease, and just below the lashes along the lower eyelid. Patients report very little pain or discomfort from this procedure and the results can be dramatic. Most patients will have some degree of postoperative bruising after eyelid surgery, but this usually fades quickly. All sutures are usually out by six days, and most patients return to work or social activities within a week to 10 days.
