Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also called a reduction mammaplasty, is surgery designed to reduce the size of the breasts. This surgery can be performed at various stages in a woman's life. For many young women the rapid development of large, heavy breasts may interfere with normal physical activities and cause musculoskeletal pain. Women ages 20 to 40 may find that breast volume has increased with each pregnancy, and never returned to its pre-pregnancy size. For older women, weight gains and menopause may contribute to an increase in their breast volume that is no longer in proportion with the rest of their body. Whatever the stage in life, the decision to undergo a breast reduction is a very personal choice and is tied to issues of self-esteem and femininity.

The surgical procedure usually takes less than three hours, during which excess skin, fatty tissue and breast tissue are removed. Surgery is performed at the Center for Special Surgery. Patients usually leave sore, but comfortable and without the need for narcotics or pain pumps. They usually resume daily activities in 48 hours and may resume normal exercise in two to three weeks. Scars will fade with time but are an important concern when considering reduction mammaplasty. Insurance reimbursement for reduction mammaplasty differs by state and by insurance company. Every effort will be made to obtain pre-certification for this surgery. However, many insurance companies may consider breast reduction a cosmetic procedure.
