Reduce the Discomfort of Heavy Breasts

Breast reduction is a surgery designed to reduce the volume of the breast while lifting and tightening the skin. Breast reduction surgery is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgical procedures and can be performed at various stages in a woman’s life. Dr. Caroline Glicksman has been performing breast reduction surgery in New Jersey since 1991 and has found this procedure to be one of the most rewarding in her practice, which also offers breast lift surgery.

Who Is a Candidate for a Breast Reduction?

Dr. Glicksman’s breast reduction patients are often as young as 14 to 15 years of age and usually come into the office accompanied by their mother. Symptoms such as back and neck pain can occur along with with the rapid development of large, heavy breasts. These symptoms often interfere with normal physical activities and can contribute to weight gain. Very large breasts during adolescence can also lead to issues related to low self-esteem. Younger patients who may still be developing may undergo an evaluation and receive moral support until Dr. Glicksman feels they are both physically and psychologically ready to undergo a breast reduction.

For women between the ages 20 to 40, the causes of hypertrophic breasts may vary from weight gain to pregnancies to genetics. Women may find that their large or heavy breasts interfere with buying clothes for work or cause worsening back problems that may interfere with exercise.

For women with existing breast asymmetries, a breast reduction can be performed on one side with a lift performed on the other. For older women, weight gain and menopause may contribute to an increase in breast volume that may be out of proportion with the rest of their body. Whatever the stage of life, the decision to undergo a breast reduction is a very personal choice and is tied to issues of self-confidence and femininity.

Every Patient. Every Visit.

Dr. Glicksman is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has been committed to delivering expert, state-of-the-art care for her patients for over 25 years. The doctor performs all of her own consultations, procedures, and treatments and does not use “practice extenders” to care for her patients.

What Does the Surgical Procedure Involve?

The surgical procedure usually takes less than three hours during which excess skin, fatty tissue, and breast tissue are removed. Dr. Glicksman performs all of her surgeries at her fully accredited ambulatory surgical center in Manalapan, NJ. Anesthesia is provided by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Patients generally leave the surgical center sore, but comfortable, and without the need for narcotics or pain pumps. Patients most often return to their normal daily activities in about 24 to 48 hours and may resume exercise in two to three weeks. The exact length and location of the surgical scars will vary from patient to patient, but there will be scars associated with this procedure, and they are an important concern when considering a reduction mammaplasty. Early scar management is an integral part of Dr. Glicksman’s comprehensive post-operative care and long-term management.

What Do I Need to Do Before a Breast Reduction in New Jersey?

Patients older than 35 years of age need an up-to-date mammogram obtained within the year prior to their surgery.

As for breast reduction cost, insurance reimbursement for reduction mammaplasty differs by state and by insurance company. Every effort will be made to obtain precertification for this surgery, and supporting letters from other physicians may be very useful. Unfortunately, many insurance companies require very extensive criteria for precertification for breast reduction costs, and all women considering this procedure should check to make sure that they have out-of-network benefits. Additional financing options are available, including
CareCredit®, for patients who either do not have health insurance or do not meet the requirements for coverage.
