Find Out More About Permanent Fat Removal

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Caroline Glicksman has been performing safe and effective fat-reduction procedures since 1991. Liposuction at her New Jersey practice is a great procedure for patients who have developed problem areas of subcutaneous fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

This procedure can improve the contour of areas including neck, chest and back, abdomen, hips, and thighs. Unlike some of the newer non-surgical fat removal techniques, like CoolSculpting®, liposuction can produce more dramatic results, most often in a single procedure.

History of Liposuction

Modern liposuction dates back to the early 20th century. The first attempts at fat reduction and body-contouring surgery often resulted in disfiguring results. Through the decades, surgical techniques evolved. Liposuction as we know it today was first described by the famous French surgeon Yves-Gerard Illouz in the early 1970s. He was the first surgeon to describe the use of blunt-tipped cannulas, or tubes, to suction fat, thereby reducing tissue trauma.

Through the 1980s and 1990s, plastic surgeons introduced more advanced techniques that allow increasing amounts of fat to be removed in much less time. Liposuction also differs from non-surgical fat reduction techniques, as Dr. Glicksman has more control over the shape and contour of the area to be treated.

Further refinements include the use of lidocaine for pain control. Newer cannulas were designed to treat specific hard-to-treat areas, and modern liposuction machines became more advanced and reliable.

Dr. Glicksman’s Specialized Liposuction Training

Dr. Glicksman performed her cosmetic fellowship in Boston, Massachusetts, with Dr. Gene Courtis, one of the most prolific innovators in modern liposuction. While techniques may vary slightly depending on the area to be treated, the key to predictable, beautiful results in any plastic surgery procedure lies in careful patient selection. Preoperative markings then define the problem areas.

Patient selection is extremely important in ensuring that patients’ expectations are real, excellent results can be obtained, and patients heal without complications.

Every Patient. Every Visit.

Dr. Glicksman is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has been committed to delivering expert, state-of-the-art care for her patients for over 25 years. The doctor performs all of her own consultations, procedures, and treatments and does not use “practice extenders” to care for her patients.

Evaluating the Liposuction Patient

Dr. Glicksman will carefully evaluate each patient in her New Jersey office. The doctor, not a medical assistant or nurse educator, sees every patient. Pre-operative photographs are obtained, in multiple views, and Vectra 3D imaging may be used to create simulations of possible surgical outcomes. A surgical quote will be given that will outline all expenses including the surgical fee, anesthesia fee, and the facility fees.

Liposuction Procedure and Recovery

Liposuction patients usually require general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, and all procedures are performed at Dr. Glicksman’s fully accredited and licensed ambulatory surgery center in Manalapan, NJ. Small incisions are made in very inconspicuous locations, and cannulas (tubes) connected to a vacuum machine are used to removed the unwanted fat.

Dr. Glicksman uses Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL) with a tumescent technique. The power-assisted cannula moves back and forth, removing more fat in less time, and the tumescent technique can help reduce bleeding and bruising during and after the procedure.

After the fat is removed, the small incisions are closed. Patients are then placed in a comfortable compression-type garment to help with skin retraction, healing, and comfort.

The procedure usually takes about an hour or less, depending on the location to be treated, and patients go home from the surgery center sore, but comfortable. There is often some bruising after liposuction, and most patients will be instructed to wear their compression garment for about two weeks. It is usually recommended that patients do not do any cardiovascular-type exercises for two weeks after a surgical procedure, but may walk and resume other activities of daily living in a few days. Heavier exercise may resume after two weeks as tolerated.

Liposuction can be performed alone or in combination with other procedures, such as a tummy tuck, when indicated. The procedure generally requires at least a few days off from work, and patients may require some help with small children. The final post-operative results will appear after all the swelling and bruising subsides, usually weeks or months after the procedure.

For patients who have smaller problem areas or may have already had liposuction in the past, CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical alternative. CoolSculpting® generally removes less fat during each session than liposuction but can be performed without the need for anesthesia, stitches, or any significant downtime.

Fat-reduction options will be discussed during the initial consultation, and an individual plan will be made that helps patients achieve their body contouring goals.
