Abdominoplasty
For many women, the effects of pregnancy or weight fluctuations over the years results in weakened abdominal wall muscles and loose, extra skin.
An abdominoplasty is a procedure that is designed to tighten both the lax muscles and remove the excess skin and fat in the abdominal area. Abdominoplasty
is not, however, a substitute for diet and exercise.
A thorough exam is necessary to determine if you are a candidate for a full abdominoplasty. Patients must be carefully examined for areas of muscle weakness,
skin laxity and any abdominal hernias. Old abdominal scars are evaluated including C-section scars. Abdominoplasty may be combined with liposuction in the
surrounding areas, if indicated.
An abdominoplasty is also utilized in patients after massive weight loss associated with lap band or other gastric bypass-type procedures. All patients
undergoing abdominoplasty will need medical clearance if they have any additional medical conditions.
The surgical procedure takes up to two hours and is performed as outpatient surgery at the Center for Special Surgery. Patients usually leave the center sore,
but comfortable, without the need for pain pumps.
After surgery you might require some help for a few days, especially if you have small children. Most patients return to normal activities in 48 to 72 hours
and resume cardio exercises at two weeks depending on the extent of abdominal repair.
